Ketchum Real Estate

Ketchum is one of Idaho’s most unique towns. This small town is hidden in the Wood River Valley, south of the resort center of Sun Valley. As you search for your new home, take a little bit of time to find out more about this remarkable small town. With interesting characteristics ranging from fantastic skiing to celebrity residents, Ketchum real estate will surprise and delight you.

History

In 1880, Ketchum was a very different place than it is now. Originally known as Leadville, Ketchum was a smelting center for the Warm Springs mining district. Silver and lead ore were processed and refined there. The town gained its current name after members of the community took the initiative to add some variety to the area. They named it after a trapper, David Ketchum, who had staked a claim in the area in years previous. When mining initiatives faded, Ketchum became a popular site for shepherds as they moved their herds up into the mountain valleys of the area for the summer. The Union Pacific Railroad established Sun Valley in 1963, and shortly after that Ketchum became a popular celebrity getaway. Notable figures who retreated to Ketchum included writer Ernest Hemingway and actor Gary Cooper.

Recreation

There is no question as to why Ketchum real estate is such a popular commodity among celebrities. First and foremost, when you move to Ketchum Idaho, you have unprecedented access to world-class skiing. In addition to superb winter sports entertainment, the Wood River Valley is a great place boasting opportunities for hiking, fishing, hunting, and boating. The area has more than 30 miles of paved biking trails that link the towns in the Wood River Valley. For the mountain adventurists, there are more than 100 miles of biking and hiking trails where you may retreat into the quiet wilderness and find some of the best views of the valley. The Magic Reservoir, located in the Sawtooth National Forest, is 14,000 acres of boating heaven. In the summer the reservoir is great for fishing and if you would rather not put your tackle box on the shelf for the winter, you will be excited to learn that the Magic Reservoir is open for ice fishing.

Education

As you prepare to invest in Ketchum real estate, you will want to know what schools are available in the area.
